Tidal information on charts

On Admiralty charts and some others there is another way of showing the tidal stream in certain positions – the letter A inside a diamond refers to a table on the chart giving the direction and strength of the tidal stream in that position. These figures are given for springs (first) and neaps and for each hour in relation to high water at a Standard Port.

The effect of the tidal stream

The effect of the tidal stream is most obvious when it is either against us or directly behind us when we are sailing in a river or the entrance to a harbour.

In the example below, boat A is motoring along at its usual 5 knots, and its speedometer shows 5 knots. But looking from the boat to shore will show it is going faster than that because her speed over the ground is 7 knots. You can also say that she is making good 7 knots.
